National Ferry Fortnight dates announcement 0 comments / Category : News Articles Britain’s annual National Ferry Fortnight will this year take place from 6 – 20 May 2017. Now in its ninth year, National Ferry Fortnight is run by Discover Ferries, the industry body for the ferry industry as a two week showcase of Britain’s extensive 75-plus ferry routes and the benefits of travel by sea. This 2017 Discover Ferries’ National Ferry Fortnight campaign theme is Ferry Together – encouraging family and friends to spend more time together. Research undertaken by Discover Ferries at the beginning of 2017 highlights how little quality time families are spending together due to the hectic nature of modern life. Results showed that the average family spends just three weeks of real quality time together each year, and just 36 minutes on the average week day. In comparison, adults spend almost four times as long – one hour and 55 minutes per day – watching TV or playing on their gadgets. Children are also staring at a screen of some kind for around two hours and 22 minutes a day. As a result, two thirds of parents say holidays and trips away from home are the only real time they get together. Going out for meals together was found to be the best way of spending quality time together on holiday, followed by doing activities together, the evening entertainment and the journey there. And almost half of those surveyed said the entire holiday counts as quality time. Bill Gibbons Discover Ferries Director said: “Our research has shown just how incredibly important every second of holiday time is in our busy lives. Almost half of the people we surveyed said their whole holiday counts as quality time together. Our members do their utmost to make the ferry journey the very start of the family holiday experience. Unlike an airplane where you’re strapped in alongside each other in front of computer screens, a ferry journey gives people time to stretch their legs, eat a meal together or watch wildlife together. National Ferry Fortnight will be a celebration of ways to spend that treasured time together.” The 10 members of Discover Ferries are Brittany Ferries, Caledonian MacBrayne, DFDS Seaways, Irish Ferries, Isle Of Man Steam Packet Company, Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, P&O Ferries, Red Funnel, Stena Line and Wightlink. During National Ferry Fortnight 2017 Discover Ferries’ members will be publishing holiday ideas and added-value offers on ferry routes to France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Ireland, Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Isles of Scilly and Scottish islands. New Lower Thames Crossings to cut congestion and create thousands of jobs 0 comments / Category : News Articles Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has today (12 April 2017) announced the preferred route for a new Lower Thames Crossing that could create more than 6,000 jobs and boost the economy by more than £8 billion. The new crossing will create a new link between the A2 and the M25 and reduce the burden on the busy Dartford Crossing. The Lower Thames Crossing is expected to carry 4.5 million heavy goods vehicles in its first year. This investment in our roads can help transform the growth potential of our country and improve people’s journeys to and around the south-east. The planned route will run from the M25 near North Ockendon, cross the A13 at Orsett before crossing under the Thames east of Tilbury and Gravesend. A new link road will then take traffic to the A2 near Shorne, close to where the route becomes the M2. This route was identified by the majority of nearly 47,000 respondents to a consultation on a new Lower Thames Crossing as the best solution for reducing traffic and congestion at the Dartford Crossing and for boosting the economy by improving links to London and the Channel ports. A further £10 million will be used to improve traffic flow at and around the existing crossing as well as studying ways to further tackle congestion. This will include a wide-ranging investigation into options to cut ‘rat-running’ through Dartford and Thurrock. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: We are making the big decisions for Britain. The new Lower Thames Crossing, and other improvements in and around Dartford and Thurrock announced today, will further strengthen our economy while also creating thousands of jobs. Our £23 billion investment into our roads is already making a difference, with schemes being completed across the country, including the M1 Catthorpe junction and A556 at Knutsford, cutting journey times for millions of motorists. The schemes announced today not only show we are taking decisions, we are planning upgrades and we are completing roads – making the lives of millions of motorists better. In addition to the Lower Thames Crossing, the government is investing a further £66 million to widen the A13 Stanford-le-Hope bypass from 2 to 3 lanes. This will help create more than 4,000 jobs and unlock the development of hundreds of new houses, and improve links to Tilbury and new London Gateway ports. This investment is part of a £78.85 million Thurrock Council project scheduled to be complete by the end of 2019. Christian Brodie, Chairman of South East Local Enterprise Partnership, said: This is excellent news for Kent and Essex and will have a significant economic impact. The investments announced will strengthen the resilience of our UK and European connections – imperative as we now move towards Brexit. However, the benefits go far beyond Kent and Essex. With the current Dartford Crossing already operating at capacity and freight traffic continuing to grow, the new crossing will also support the government’s wider economic aspirations for the Northern Powerhouse and Midlands Engine. Tim Waggott, Port of Dover Chief Executive, said: The Port of Dover handles up to £119 billion of trade or 17% of the UK’s trade in goods and is vital to the UK’s trading relationship with Europe – our largest and nearest trading partner. Half of its freight traffic is heading beyond London to support economic activity in the Midlands Engine and Northern Powerhouse government priority areas. With freight traffic through Dover growing by a third in only 4 years and with a forecast 40% growth in freight traffic by the end of the next decade, it is essential that traffic fluidity is maintained and enhanced on this key trade corridor connecting the rest of the UK with mainland Europe. The Lower Thames Crossing is an essential ingredient of the strategic infrastructure mix required to deliver national economic prosperity. The port fully supports today’s announcement by the government and warmly welcomes its commitment to keep the nation’s traffic and trade moving. This announcement comes weeks after a number of road improvements were opened to traffic and Highways England started consulting on further upgrades. In the north-west, the A556 near Manchester has been completed weeks ahead of schedule – creating quicker, safer and more reliable journeys for the 50,000 motorists who use the road between the M6 and the M56 each day. In the north-east, Highways England has completed improvements to the A160/A180 enabling better access to Immingham Port, while also improving safety. Highways England has started consulting on dualling the A358 between the A303 and the M5 at Taunton. This will help relieve congestion, help unlock economic growth in the south-west and enhance safety.

P&O Ferries reports highest ever Q1 freight volumes on the English Channel 0 comments / Category : News Articles The ferry and logistics company’s six ships on the Dover-Calais route transported 361,100 lorries during January, February and March. This figure was almost 11 per cent higher than the corresponding period in 2016 and nine per cent higher than the previous best ever Q1 in 2012. In a sign of the rising importance of the cross-Channel transport of goods to the economies of both Britain and Europe, P&O Ferries set individual monthly freight records in January, February and March respectively. Janette Bell, Managing Director of P&O Ferries, said: “We are committed to delivering a reliable, punctual service with the lowest possible waiting times to anyone transporting goods between Dover and Calais.” “Our performance during Q1 shows just how many businesses across Europe rely – either directly or indirectly – on the services we provide. Our ferries are a vital conduit for the transport of fresh fruit and vegetables, building materials, components for production lines and much else besides.” “We expect demand for cross-Channel transport to increase, driven by a rising population and the continuing strength of the British economy. It is essential for our customers from all parts of Europe that maintaining secure, safe and efficient passage through the ports of Dover and Calais is a priority for both sides negotiating Britain’s departure from the European Union.” During the quarter, two of P&O Ferries’ English Channel ships – the Pride of Canterbury and the Pride of Burgundy – spent several weeks each in Poland’s Remontowa shipyard for major life extension work. Both vessels, which weigh up to 30,000 tons, have now been relaunched and are back in service. P&O Ferries is a leading pan-European ferry and logistics company, sailing on eight major routes between Britain, France, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Holland and Belgium. It operates 20 vessels which carry more than 10 million passengers, 1.6 million cars and 2.2 million freight units every year. Together with its logistics division, P&O Ferrymasters, the company also operates integrated road and rail links to countries across the continent including Italy, Poland and Romania. A P&O Ferrymasters-owned rail terminal in the northern Romanian city of Oradea, which will facilitate the onward movement of goods to Britain from the Silk Road, became operational last year.

DWDR Commencement of Construction 0 comments / Category : News Articles Following key enabling works, this major stage of the construction programme has now begun and is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2018. As the result of these works there will be some changes to the seafront area to establish the construction zone from 7th February 2017. This will affect both the Esplanade, Union Street, the waterfront and harbour and require the closure of the Esplanade at Cambridge Terrace in order to facilitate the commencement of work on the navigation channel required to connect the Wellington Dock to the new marina. Vehicle access from Union Street to the Esplanade/Marine Parade will not be available in either direction throughout the duration of this construction phase due to the extent of the construction zone and the location of the site entrance south of the Marina Swingbridge. Union Street car park will, however, remain open and available to berth holders, marina users and car park permit holders. Public parking at Union Street car park will be suspended during this period. Pedestrian and SUSTRANS Cycle Route 2 access will be maintained at all times. Access to seafront businesses and amenities will remain available throughout the construction period with clear diversion signs located on the A20. From Spring 2017 dredgers will be operational within the harbour prior to the commencement of piling necessary for the construction of the new cargo berths and marina. Regular updates of all construction activity phases will be communicated to all stakeholders. We greatly value our relationship with the local community and ever mindful of the potential impacts caused by large infrastructure projects such as the DWDR development. We will endeavour to do everything in our power to mitigate at all stages of construction. The revival of the western part of the Port estate supports the developing destination agenda for Dover, being identified as the key catalyst for the wider regeneration of the area. It will deliver valuable employment opportunities both during construction and on completion of the new facilities. The location of the marketing suite has now moved to the DWDR Project Office at De Bradelei Wharf. We will reopen to the public towards the end of February but will happily arrange private appointments prior to that time. We appreciate your continued patience and support during this exciting waterfront regeneration. Keep in Touch DWDR Feedback Please complete our feedback form, via this link. Business coalition makes case for Lower Thames Crossing to Chancellor 0 comments / Category : News Articles Dear Chancellor, Increasing growth and productivity with the Lower Thames Crossing As a vital tool for economic success across the UK, we are calling on the Government to take swift action and make a decision on the Lower Thames Crossing route. A new crossing would make a significant contribution to two of Britain’s most significant economic challenges: the need to increase productivity and levels of exporting. Public expenditure needs to catch up and keep up with private sector developments in the South East. From the three port estate extensions at the Port of Tilbury and the development of the £1.5bn super-port at London Gateway, to the 10% year-on-year freight traffic growth at key Channel gateways where Eurotunnel and ports such as Dover (along with sister ports in France) are making major capacity investments, in addition to the investment at London Southend Airport. The Channel, London and Medway port operations account for in excess of a quarter of the UK’s GDP in trade. That trade, combined with other business traffic, currently flows through the highly unreliable Dartford crossings, which suffer from over 300 standstill delays per annum. The Department for Transport estimates traffic through this international business corridor will grow by 41% over the next 20 years. It is imperative that we have high quality infrastructure to help alleviate this bottleneck to maintain fluidity and allow us to boost trade and compete with the Continent. Businesses across the South East, Midlands and the North need reliable journey times to make critically important operational decisions which rely on just-in-time processes for trade and commerce. This investment will support planned growth and will enhance the ability of these regions to attract future investment. In addition, housing is fundamental to the local economic strategy to deliver new jobs, and more needs to be done urgently to accelerate the housing delivery we all seek. National and local government must seize the moment to ensure that infrastructure and economic growth goes hand-in-hand with housing growth. The Lower Thames Crossing would support the sustainable development of the area and ensure that existing communities gain their share of the region’s success. We greatly value that Highways England have held a public consultation earlier this year. We stress that momentum should be maintained and that a final decision on the preferred route be made sooner rather than later. The business community remains loud, clear and unified in support of a new crossing at Location C, east of Gravesend. We have large investment decisions pending the outcome of this crucial project and we are concerned that a prolonged decision will cause uncertainty in a fragile, but growing economy. We urge the Government to make a swift decision on the preferred route, with a firm timetable and financial package for its delivery.
