A20 junction improvements postponed to ensure right traffic solution for Dover 0 comments / Category : Press Release The Port is acutely aware of the pressure such volumes of UK and European trade place on a road network shared with the local community, particularly when combined with challenging operational factors such as the recent fire at the Channel Tunnel or adverse weather. As such, much work has been going on in terms of providing additional resource to proactively manage the day to day traffic issues. The Port is accelerating work to deliver an additional 4km of freight vehicle holding space within the Port through the Traffic Management Improvement project. Eurotunnel is also working on creating additional freight lanes to hold a further 290 freight vehicles. Exciting times are ahead for Dover through the Port’s key Dover Western Docks Revival project and other Dover regeneration projects, such as the St James development (which also requires the removal of Burlington House), being led by Dover District Council (DDC). With such a variety of major projects underway or on the horizon, it is important that the impact of traffic flows from these and other developments are fully understood in order that Dover receives the right long term traffic solution. Factoring in the further impact of Government imposed exit checks for every passenger leaving the UK through international gateways such as the Port of Dover from 1 April 2015, the Port and DDC have recently been working hard to review such impacts on the A20 in Dover over the coming months and particularly the peak summer period. Such work has led to serious consideration about the appropriateness of commencing the A20 junction improvement works in April 2015 as previously planned. As a result, both partners have today agreed to postpone the junction improvements so that further traffic assessment work can be carried out to ensure that the regeneration of Dover is supported by the best traffic solution on the A20. Tim Waggott, Chief Executive, Port of Dover, says: “We are delighted that Dover District Council has accepted our proposal that the commencement of A20 Junction Works is postponed whilst we review the wider needs case for our shared vision for Dover.” Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council, says: “We are pleased to see all agencies working together to achieve solutions in response to the current pressures on the road network. This matter was raised again today during Prime Minister’s Questions. Any solutions need to be sustainable to both improve management of traffic to and from the Port, and to meet the day-to-day needs of town traffic. Local businesses, residents and visitors need to be assured that these matters are addressed once and for all. To this end, we have agreed the A20 junction works should be postponed until the autumn and the outcome of the review ordered by the Roads Minister, and further assessments are carried out.” ENDS Issued by Corporate Affairs on 01304 240400 (ext. 4410 from 8.30 – 17.00)
EU funding recognises the ports of Dover and Calais as vital to UK-European trade 0 comments / Category : Press Release The Port of Dover, together with the Port of Calais and the Regional Council Nord-Pas de Calais – owner of the port – are therefore delighted that their significant ongoing work to deliver essential short term capacity enhancements has been supported with over €14 million of EU funding from the European Commission. Recognising the growing importance of Dover and Calais as core ports within a key transport corridor connecting the UK with France and the rest of Europe, the partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding in April 2014 to cement long term commitment to delivering a shared vision of the future through the BRIDGE (Building the Resilience of International and Dependent Gateways in Europe) project. BRIDGE is ensuring that Dover-Calais remains resilient in the face of significant market growth and in support of an effective and efficient European transport network and growing European trade along the corridor. This is being achieved through major investment in protecting, maximising and delivering essential short and long term capacity with enhanced flexibility and efficiency as well as exploring new development opportunities. The funding received is for the first phase of the BRIDGE project, dedicated to short term improvements. Through the Calais Port 2015 and Dover Western Docks Revival projects, European support will also be sought in delivering the long term elements of BRIDGE. Tim Waggott, Chief Executive, Port of Dover, says: “The Port of Dover handles £100 billion (€130 billion) of trade each year on behalf of the UK and EU. With around 80% of that trade moving between Dover and Calais, it is absolutely vital that nationally and internationally, the importance of this bridge between the UK and Europe is understood and supported. I am therefore delighted that, with our own Department for Transport’s support, the European Union has recognised this and the urgency of supporting us in delivering key short and long term capacity enhancements on this core trade route by granting us €14 million of funding.” The partners look forward to delivering current and future capacity improvements on behalf of the UK, France and the EU. Port of Dover Remains Resilient 0 comments / Category : Press Release Over the weekend, the Port of Dover and its three major ferry operators provided emergency assistance in getting stranded Tunnel passengers across the Channel. The Port continued to maximise available capacity for the additional traffic whilst maintaining a first class service for customers already heading to Europe’s busiest ferry port. Nearly 35% extra traffic resulted in increased ferry services over the weekend to cope with the stranded travellers. Tim Waggott, the Port of Dover’s Chief Executive, believes the Port reacted in very quick time to assist the hundreds of passengers and freight vehicles caught in the Eurotunnel problems: “Despite the increased number of customers heading through the Port, we succeeded, along with our ferry partners, in providing a safe and reliable service to help those passengers frustrated with their travel issues. Our staff embraced the challenge and passengers have expressed their appreciation of the extra effort made to keep them informed. We were happy to help those who passed through the Port and hope we managed to rescue travel and commercial plans.” As Europe’s busiest ferry port, Dover is used to handling large volumes of traffic heading across the shortest route between the UK and mainland Europe. ENDS Notes to Editor: Customers are advised to contact their chosen ferry operator before travelling and consult the Port of Dover website (www.doverport.co.uk) or Twitter account (@Port_of_Dover) for the latest information, whilst we continue to focus on our first class services for all our customers. Dover Harbour Board seeks further modernising powers 0 comments / Category : Press Release It will forever embed the power for the Board to appoint two community directors, which in turn will strengthen the links between the Port and its community as envisaged in the Ministerial statement made in April 2014. These directors will bring special knowledge or experience of the position of the Port within the local community and local economy. The HRO also puts the Port’s consultative mechanisms on a statutory basis and, in line with the Companies Act 2006, provides for meetings to take place by electronic means. The Port is a hugely important part of the local economy, ranking first as the largest ferry port in the EU. The powers sought are considered necessary to enable Dover Harbour Board to work with the community at the beginning of what will be a significant period of regeneration for the Port and its town. Currently the Board consists of a chairman and 4 other members appointed by the Secretary of State, the chief executive officer and a further executive officer with the Board having discretion to appoint a further member. The HRO would retain the power of the Secretary of State to appoint the chairman with the other members of the Board (“directors”) being appointed by the Board. On 9 April 2014 the Shipping and Ports Minister, Stephen Hammond MP said: “I believe Dover needs an enduring and meaningful consultative relationship with its port. This can be achieved by a legal commitment to consult interested parties, as has been done successfully at other major trust ports. The port and community forum and port user group are in their early days but these groups, among others which have been seen to work well at major trust ports, could be vehicles for delivering this legal commitment. But we need to do more to deliver a significant and enduring relationship between town and port. So as well as the legal commitment I have agreed with the board that an important form of permanent community involvement is seats in the boardroom. Therefore additional, community non-executive directors should be appointed to the board, as has been done at other successful trust ports. The future board will consist of the chairman, existing non-executive specialist directors, executive directors, and now these community non-executive directors.” ENDS Notes in Editors For further information and to refer to the official documentation, please visit http://www.doverport.co.uk/about/the-board/ ‘Further Modernising Powers Being Sought’. Port of Dover celebrates record-breaking freight boom 0 comments / Category : Press Release The most recent forecasted figures for UK growth were 3.0% over the previous 12 months and yet the Port of Dover has recorded more than three times that figure in a similar period. This will hearten all the political parties in the UK knowing the UK ports are playing a vital part in this growth. Europe’s busiest ferry port is seen as a barometer of the UK economy, particularly through the freight vehicle volumes that arrive by road from across the UK and mainland Europe to deliver the goods on which we all rely. Political parties this week begin to set out their economic credentials ahead of May’s General Election, but the Port of Dover can already demonstrate its ability to support a growing economy. Tim Waggott, Chief Executive, Port of Dover, said: “If you want to see how the UK economy is doing, come and see what is happening at the Port of Dover. We are smashing records whilst rebuilding parts of the Port in order to provide new infrastructure that will support further anticipated growth in the years to come. In effectively handling such volumes of UK trade, the Port is establishing itself as a national economic success story.” ENDS Issued by Port of Dover on 01304 240400 (Ext 4410 from 8.30 – 17.00)
