Ferry - Freight Information
There is a taxi rank directly outside the Passenger Terminal where passengers arriving from the Continent can hire a cab to the railway station or elsewhere.
Cyclists must await instructions from the operators’ staff to either join or leave the ferry. It is very important that, at the point where the loading bridge crosses onto the vessel deck, cyclists dismount and walk across as unexpected movements of the bridge may occur.
Riders should ensure that they are sufficiently visible by their clothing and that cycles are equipped with lights. While all cyclists are responsible for their own safety, it is recommended that cyclists (i) ensure that their bicycles are road worthy and (ii) wear helmets while riding through the Port.
In addition, adults cycling with children are responsible for the safety of the children.
It is recommended that children are positioned to ride between adults and are of an appropriate age and proficiency to be confident cycling in the environment presented by the Port. Cyclists should be able to ride comfortably without hindrance from baggage.
All baggage should be properly stowed in back packs or bike panniers. The safety of pedestrians must be respected on any shared sections of the rout
All ticket sales (except for foot passengers) must be transacted online, by telephone or at the relevant operator Check-in. The P&O Ferries foot passenger ticket desk can be found in the Passenger Terminal.
Since April 2000, pet owners have been permitted to travel onboard ferries with their pets, providing certain requirements are met. More precise details can be found at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
Once you have been cleared from Border Control, the barrier will be lifted and you may drive on. As you continue to head into the Port, some motorists (but not all) will be asked to pull into the search building, where your vehicle may be searched. This is a standard procedure and agents are just checking for any contraband.
There are allowances for products such as alcohol and tobacco. For more information and guides to what duty free allowances you are allowed to travel with, please visit https://www.gov.uk/duty-free-goods/overview
Under the regulations of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code 2004 the Port Authority is responsible for creating and maintaining a secure area around all vessels.
As a condition of entering this restricted area you may be required to submit yourself, your baggage and your vehicle to a security search
Failure to comply with these regulations could result in a refusal to enter the restricted area for onward travel.
Any items that could be used as an offensive weapon will be confiscated. You will have the option of having any legally confiscated items returned to you on your return but this will incur a storage and administration charge of £30 plus postage, all other items will be disposed of by the Port of Dover.
We fully understand the frustration that these checks can cause to our customers but the Port must carry them out by law and co-operating fully with the security staff will enable them to carry out their checks in a matter of minutes and get you back on your way.
